INTRODUCTION
The ChessMAGIC! Offline Game Reader (e.g. CMReader) is FREE for all chess
enthusiasts to use and enjoy. However, the program remains copyrighted
and is the sole property of KnightWare (Bud Bradley). The complete
CMReader archive may be freely distributed as long as the contents remain
intact and without modification.
CMReader provides the means to play back and study any chess game from a
simple text format file. The main benefits of CMReader, though, are
derived when used in conjunction the BBS door ChessMAGIC! (registered
versions). Registered ChessMAGIC! versions enable users to download
games matching many and varied criteria for later offline study at their
leisure.

1.0 CMReader -- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PC/MS-DOS 2.11 or higher
360k Floppy Drive
185k RAM Minimum
Hercules Graphics with B/W or CGA monitor
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.0 CMSHELL {CMReader Front End}
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CMShell should be run first, as the CMReader front end and will make
game viewing an easy operation! Even though you can still run
CMreader all by itself, CMShell provides you with simple menu
displays of available games. The command line would be:
CMSHELL
When run, a full-screen menu will show all available games (default
extension of 12 and default current logged directory) and the
associated players. Once you've chosen a game to view, CMReader will
be run with that game. After exiting CMReader, you will return to
CMShell for more choices.
There are several command keys available in CMShell:
<F1> = Prompts for up to 3 character game file extension
(defaults to 12 -- notice, no periods).
<F2> = Prompts for drive/directory in case you keep games
organized in various areas.
<F3> = Toggles between short/long game descriptions.
<PgUp> = Scrolls back one screen at a time (if many games).
<PgDown> = Scrolls forward one screen at a time (if many games).
<ESC> = CMShell exit

3.0 CMReader -- INITIALIZATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In order to operate CMReader manually (i.e. WITHOUT using CMShell),
you must specify a file name on the command line for it to use. The
specified file MUST be in the proper format (discussed later) in
order for CMReader to operate correctly. Using the included sample
file, your command line would be:
cmreader 69.12
The sample game file was generated by a registered ChessMAGIC! system.
While you may name your files anything you like, ChessMAGIC! will
always name them by game number:
69.12 <-- Game Number = 69
The file extension used/generated by ChessMAGIC! is a random pattern
for its own internal use.

5.0 CMReader -- GAME FILE FORMAT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The file MUST be in standard ASCII text form and contain NO embedded
control codes, extended ASCII characters, etc. Refer to your word
processor or text editor documentation on how to generate this type of
file.
Only ONE game per file and the contents would be similar to the
following example of a partial game:
#White:Darrell (1711)
#Black:Other Brother Darrell (1305)
# Date:11/06/91
1. f2-f4 b8-c6
@This is a non-displayed comment.
2. g1-f3 g8-f6
$This is a Black-Side comment
$and can be up to
$3 lines of 79 characters each.
3. b2-b3 f6-d5
#This is a White-side comment
#and can be up to
#3 lines of 79 characters each.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 CMReader -- Game File Format Rules & Guidelines
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comment Lines-
@ = invisible (never displays)
# = Display After White-side Move
$ = Display After Black-side Move
Comments may be up to 79 characters per line with a maximum of 3
contiguous lines prior to a move entry. A comment character must
be placed in the first column for it to be recognized as such by
CMReader.
Notation-
Long Algebraic : e2-e4
Semi-Short Algebraic : e4 Nf6 Qxc4
Although the program accepts and interprets semi-short algebraic
notation, the display will be in long algebraic form.

5.1 CMReader -- Game File Format Rules & Guidelines {continued}
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move Separator-
These can be any of the following:
e2-e4 e2;e4 e2xe4
The x is normally only used to designate captures.
Move Numbers-
Each White/Black move pair MUST either have a line to themselves,
or they can be followed by additional White/Black move pairs.
Whichever way you choose, they MUST BE IN White/Black PAIRS and a
Move Number MUST be in the first column:
Correct-
1 e2-e4 g7-g6
or
1.e2-e4 g7-g6
or
1.e2-e4 g7-g6 2.d2-d4 f8-f7 3.g1-f3 d7-d6
Incorrect-
1 e2-e4
g7-g6
or
e2-e4
g7-g6
or
23.
The last incorrect example shows a move number that lacks a
corresponding move entry.
Note: The "." (i.e. period) is ignored by CMReader, so can either
be included or excluded, whichever you prefer.
Result Designation-
Draw = 0-0 or draw
Resignation = 1-0 or 0-1 or resig
Mate = 1-0 or 0-1 or mate
Examples:
23.c1-e1 draw or 23.c1-e1 0-0
23 c1-e1 resig or 23 c1-e1 1-0 or 23 c1-e1 0-1
23.c1-e1 mate or 23 c1-e1 1-0 or 23.c1-e1 0-1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 CMReader -- Game File Format Rules & Guidelines {continued}
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pawn Promotion-
=Q Queen
=R Rook
=N Knight
=B Bishop
The promotion is designated immediately following the move.
Example, promoting a Pawn to a Queen:
23.g7-g8=Q
Exclamatory Signs-
+ ! ?
White and Black moves can contain up to 3 signs each, as shown:
15 QxR+!?
Castling-
May be entered as either long algrebraic or the following, using
capital O's:
O-O = King-side
O-O-O = Queen-side
Examples:
18.O-O O-O-O
